I know the feeling. You’re up late. You’re looking for Amazon keywords. All the niches seem to be occupied. Everything from word searches to crosswords, sudoku, etc. You want to be innovative. You want to make it up as you go along. Add a theme. Change the cover. But what’s the secret to the inside of the puzzle? It’s just the same as they all do.

I spent 5 years at that. I don’t feel good about it.

I stumbled upon a new film called Spy Academy. It’s a program for creating cipher puzzles, breaking codes, and anything else related to spying. It was something new, something that had never been before. Well, not for self-publishers anyway.

In this review, we will look at the tool and what it doesn’t do, and whether you decide to purchase this tool now, it will be worthwhile to invest.

What Is Spy Academy?

Spy Academy is a game that generates Puzzle books. But it’s not like all of the others.

It’s a one-genre book – spy/mystery. It generates a variety of puzzles, including a cipher puzzle, a code-breaking challenge, an anagram mission, a secret message decoder, and a code word grid.

There’s also another 6th tool. It creates complete spy storybooks — stories that contain ciphers which are integrated into the story. Not templates. Real stories, which will vary from session to session.

You select your parameters, press Generate, and you have a PDF. This PDF is ready to upload to KDP or list on Etsy.

It’s for publishers that wish to make something unique. Not a typical word search.

Why I Tried Spy Academy

I have been on KDP for 5 years. I have created word search books, crosswords, and coloring books. I began to see some sales decline last year. More competition. Same products everywhere.

I began to seek out something other than that. An action that was not taken by everyone.

I attended a WarriorPlus launch of Spy Academy. I saw various Spy Academy review threads on the internet, and they were all positive. A couple of people commented on the tools for parsing ciphers.

This was the first time I’ve ever begun making a cipher book. I was puzzling over how ciphers worked; it never even crossed my mind. That was kind of shitty, right?

I still made the purchase, but. It was about two weeks before I actually wrote a single word of this review. I tried it out on a lot of people for quite a long time.

Cipher Crackers

This was my favorite surprise. This is not only one kind of cipher, but nine. Caesar Shift, Morse Code, Mirror Writing, Rail Fence, and more. All of them have a different difficulty setting. I used only this tool to make a complete beginner book. Took about 40 minutes.

Anagram Missions

It’s a word unscramble tool. However, the style of the framing is spy-related. The instructions are similar to mission briefings. Children don’t react to that in the same way that they would react to a worksheet.

There are several stages to this one. Riddle clues are solved first, and then the letters are read to form the word. The clues then lead to decipher puzzles. It is more interesting than a one-piece puzzle! Four different types of challenge.

Five methods of hiding and unveiling messages. These are fun. Genuinely fun. I did test one on my nephew. He didn’t lie down for 20 minutes. Well, that said something to me.

Grids with numbers that correspond to letters, often in crossword fashion. Multiple grid sizes. More convenient to prepare than cipher books. Suitable for younger ages.

Spy Mission Storybook Builder

It’s tool #6! It creates a complete spy story with characters, story, mission, and incorporates actual cipher puzzles throughout the story. Each story has its own unique characteristics. Click on the button again, and another will appear. Output is a PDF that is ready to print. This is the one that got me to say, “Okay, this is something new, this is the one I’m looking for.

How It Works

1. Access the Spy Academy website using the login.
2. Select one of the 6 generators.
3. Choose the type of puzzle and the difficulty.
4. Pick your audience — age 6–8, 9–12, teen, or adult.
5. Select a page size (16 options).
6. Choose a colour or black and white output.

It’s a genre that no one else is developing.

Most puzzle generators are able to create four or five basic types of puzzles. Spy Academy is different all the way. There aren’t a lot of ciphers, and none of the code-breaking missions. That gap is real.

There are no monthly fees with only one payment.

I have paid for three SaaS tools that are monthly. Of those two, I used only very little. Spy Academy is a one-time purchase of $37. I appreciate that. No commitment pressure.

Designed to appeal to everyone of all ages

I tried it out for ages 6-8 and adults. It is actually hard to scale what’s actually working. The language changes. The difficulty level of the puzzle varies. This isn’t simply a font size switcher!

In less than an hour, I had my first book done! This included creating the puzzles, checking the output, and adding a cover. This is a genuine time-saving in terms of speed.

What I Didn’t Like

No free trial

You’re purchasing on a “faith” basis. I see the point of that; it’s not a subscription, it’s a one-off. I would be happier if I had even a 7-day trial. There are some who will not purchase before they try it on their own. This is an actual obstacle.

There is a limit on the number of stories in Story Mission Builder.

The rate of 25 story buildings a month. This is not much if you are attempting to create a large catalog quickly. The sales page has the issue of cost explained in a straightforward way. Yet, it’s a little bit still hurts.

It’s very simple and bare-bones.

It works. Everything functions. However, it doesn’t look nice. This is looking rather rough and ready compared to the polished SaaS tools you’re accustomed to. It made me think of software 5 years ago. I got used to it. First impressions are everything, however.

No refund policy is available.

I looked for it. I didn’t see a written assurance on the home page. That bothers me. Most people would feel better if they had a choice to return the tool if it failed to do what they expected, for a $37 tool.

If you’re looking for spy content, you’re in the right place: Spy Academy is the add-on for you. 

Alternative 2: Puzzle Maker Pro

A Puzzle book creating desktop software. It is capable of solving word searches, crosswords, etc. It’s solid, it’s an old thing. However, it doesn’t contain any spy subject matter. No ciphers. No storybooks. Some versions are less expensive, but they do not have the same function. For normal KDP puzzle books. Create puzzles and images with text. Make text-based puzzles and images. Create a cozy mystery together with your classmates. 

Alternative 3: Cozy Mystery Empire / Cozy Co-Author

These are tools to assist in writing cozy mysteries, NOT activity books. They’re intended for another customer. For those who would like a book that is a mystery, look at those. Spy Academy is the one that’s more suitable for those who want to make cipher puzzle books and activities. It’s not a run-of-the-mill competition. To carry out the writing, both Cozy Mystery tools work in a similar way. Both Cozy Mystery tools are used in a similar way when writing.

Comparison Table

My Experience and Test Results

Spy Academy has been developed based on product research, demo materials, and feature analysis, which indicates that it looks more like an activity book that could be produced quickly, rather than a puzzle created by hand. The Cipher Crackers module looks like it could be a great way to develop puzzle books for children, particularly for a specific age group, such as the 9–12 educational activities.

The Code Breaker Challenges are more customisable and have more setup options, which may allow for more advanced puzzle content. The puzzle output seems more vibrant and interesting than the simpler generators from the few examples available.

The Story Mission Builder was one thing that is interesting to note. There are a lot of similar tools that add story elements as filler, but Spy Academy seems to tie characters, missions, and cipher puzzles together to create a built-in activity experience.

There is one drawback: the workflow. The interface doesn’t seem to have an instant preview feature prior to download. That involves manually creating, downloading, and reviewing files, which involves additional steps.

Overall, from what I can see from the information here, Spy Academy seems to be a working site to make printable puzzle books for kids.

• Those who aren’t going to publish or sell it, the value is in the commercial output.

Final Verdict

My honest opinion of Spy Academy review: a legit tool that does something new.

No generator I have ever seen has the capability to make cipher books, code-breaking missions, and spy story books in one place. For non-commercial purposes only. With that many types of puzzles.

Is it perfect? No. The interface is very plain. Storybook hat is a bother. The refund policy needs to be made clearer.

But for $37 (one time) for commercial rights, unlimited activity PDFs? That’s a fair deal. In particular, at this time, before the niche fills up.

This is a worthwhile purchase if you’re looking for something different when it comes to activity books.
